Even small changes in consumption, multiplied across large groups of people can have significant impacts on big companies. The key is the large groups part. Can we realistically eliminate our own fossil fuel use all together? Not at the moment. But refusing to buy their stock, buying as little of their product as is practical (and from non-BP stations), will definitely get them where they live. This disaster has real potential to bankrupt BP on cleanup cost and liability alone, and there will be no one willing to rescue them. The less of their stuff we buy, the less money they make on it and as a nifty byproduct, the price of their wares drops, they make less money, and so the cycle continues.

Yeah, that’s true. I think boycotting is only one aspect of being a responsible consumer. Personally I’d rather see regulations enforced and negligence prosecuted at this point. What I really appreciate about the comment on Boston.com is the concept that we as consumers have more power and influence at our disposal than we generally employ.

An interesting notion, but I don’t actually know how an individual can literally boycott all derivatives of fossil fuels. You’d have to give up all forms of transportation – even your bike, electricity, plastic and even many medicines.
